"More Than Strength and Honor: Uncovering the Roman Army with Archaeology"

Join the UNT Military History Center for the 3rd Annual War Studies Symposium to hear featured speaker Dr. Lee L. Brice, Professor of History and Distinguished Faculty at Western Illinois University.

There was more to the Roman army than swords and sandals. In addition to conquering the Mediterranean world, soldiers drilled, marched, ate, had relationships, built roads, slept, and sooner or later died. They did many of the things we would expect soldiers to do in most armies, but for hundreds of years we've had to rely on literature for the lives of ancient soldiers. Archaeology has in the last several decades greatly expanded our knowledge of life in the Roman army. In this public talk Professor Lee L. Brice will discuss and illustrate how recent archaeological excavations have expanded our knowledge of army life and in the process revealed a number of surprises. Please join us to learn more. No prior experience or knowledge of the Roman army is necessary. This general talk is open to the public.

Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Tickets are $35, and lunch will be provided.
