The Department of History offers PhD students a doctoral examination field (not a concentration) in World History. This field examines history from global and transnational perspectives. Students study themes within the mostly geographic organization of the field. It emphasizes comparative cross-cultural interactions, the development of empires, and the complicated connections between historical actors, cultures, belief systems, and the physical environment. This examination field is designed to broadly train PhD students and to complement studies in our PhD concentrations (United States, European, Military, BPI).
