The Department of History offers several departmental Graduate scholarships as listed below. Applications will be posted each September on this website under the Forms tab. Applications are due by March 1st of each year for the following academic year. The application opens on September 1st and closes March 1st at 5:00 pm.

Some scholarships may require supplemental application materials (in addition to the materials required by the department for all scholarships). The criteria for each scholarship, as well as the additional supplemental materials required (if applicable) are listed below.

History Scholarship Application

When applying for scholarships, please carefully read the criteria for each scholarship and closely follow the directions on the application regarding submission of department required materials, as well as scholarship specific supplemental materials.

Donald E Chipman Graduate History Scholarship

A fund in honor of Donald E. Chipman, a Spanish Texas and Mexican history professor, and to provide scholarships for graduate students in the Department of History at the University.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
  3. Enroll as a full-time student in the Department of History at the University: preference shall be given to students with a concentration in 19th Century U.S. or Southwestern Borderlands Study. In the event no applicant possesses this characteristic, then students enrolling full-time in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University will be eligible for consideration.
Dr. Marilyn Morris Endowed Scholarship Fund

A fund in memory of Dr. Marilyn Morris, to provide scholarships for students who are enrolled as part-time or full-time graduate students in the Department of History and who are pursuing research focused on gender or gender and sexuality.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University (or its successor) in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain at least part-time enrollment as established by the University;
  3. Enroll as a part-time or full-time graduate student in the Department of History (or its successor) at the University and be pursuing research focused on gender or gender and sexuality; and
  4. Demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial assistance as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (or its successor), which includes an application process that contains written release from the student to share FAFSA information between university departments and donors coordinating related award processes or have a completed FAFSA on file if there are no applicants with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. If there are no applicants who meet either of these conditions, applicants without a completed FAFSA on file will be eligible for consideration.
Gordon R. Carpenter Endowed Scholarship

An endowment in honor of Gordon R. Carpenter and to provide scholarships for Ph.D. students pursuing degrees in the Department of History at the University.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain at least part-time enrollment as established by the University;
  3. Enroll as a Ph.D. student pursuing a degree in the Department of History (or its successor) at the University;
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
  5. Have a grade point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent); and
  6. Be engaged in the preparation of their doctoral thesis on some aspect of American History. Preference will be given to applicants preparing their thesis on some aspect of the United States Constitution, or Political or Economic History.
History Excellence Scholarship

A fund to provide scholarships to history majors.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average; or enroll as a candidate for an M.A. or Ph.D. in History in good standing and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.8;
  2. Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.
History General Scholarship

A fund to support undergraduate and graduate history students.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of their degree program in the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History or as a graduate student pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. in History;
  3. Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program.
Hurley Graduate Scholarship Fund

A fund established to support graduate scholarships in military history.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. An applicant must enroll as a full-time graduate student working in military history or a related field and;
  2. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Nation's Heritage Scholarship

A fund to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate History majors.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of their degree program in the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Enroll as an undergraduate student majoring in History or as a graduate student pursuing an M.S., M.A., or Ph.D. in History;
  3. Maintain part-time or full time enrollment at the University.
The Al & J.M. Murdock Scholarship

A fund to provide graduate student academic scholarships.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of his or her degree program and does not need full-time enrollment; and
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student studying military history at the University.
The Al Murdock, William T. and Charlotte N. Hagan Scholarship in History

A fund to provide need-based scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students working toward a degree in history.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University (or its successor) in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
  3. Enroll as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in history at the University; and
  4. The Bruzzy Westheimer Graduate Fellowship in Human Security

A fund to support outstanding graduate students focusing on human security issues during their graduate studies.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Applications will be accepted from graduate students enrolled at, or applying to, the University of North Texas in any discipline, but pursuing research and/or scholarly activities related to human security. Graduate students with majors housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will be given first priority;
  2. Academic potential for excellence as evidenced by cumulative GPA for the 60 hours preceding application;
  3. Publications, research, scholarly presentations or serving as a teaching assistant, research assistant or teaching fellow related to issues related to human security;
  4. A minimum of two letters of recommendation attesting to the integrity and professional/academic potential of the applicant in the area of human security.
The Bullitt Lowry Research Award for Graduate Students in European History

This fund is in memory of Dr. Bullitt Lowry and is to provide travel reimbursement awards to graduate students.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment;
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student studying history with a focus in European history at the University; and
  4. Be actively engaged in thesis/dissertation research focusing on any aspect of European history and requiring international travel to support the completion of the applicant’s degree.
  5. Submit a letter describing where and when you are planning to travel to Europe, an estimate of how much the trip will cost, and please include the working title of your dissertation.
The Friends of the Department of History Scholarship

A fund to provide scholarships for graduate students in the Department of History at the University.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student in history at the University; in the event no applicant possess this characteristic, then undergraduate students enrolling full-time in history at the University will be eligible for consideration.
The Jim Berry Pearson Scholarship

A fund to provide scholarships for History students at the University.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full time enrollment at the University, unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program;
  3. Enroll as a full-time student majoring in History at the University of North Texas;
  4. Accepted at the time of application by the Graduate School and the Department of History for graduate study toward any of the degrees offered by the Department.
  5. A 3.00 or higher grade point average;
  6. In the opinion of the Chair of the History Department, is seeking knowledge for the sake of and sheer joy of knowledge itself.
The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy & the Culinary Arts Fellowship in Food History

A fund to assist in recruiting a high-quality graduate student in food history.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Apply for admission to the Toulouse Graduate School (or its successor).
  2. The recipient for this fellowship must apply for admission to the MA or PhD program in history at UNT.
  3. Apply for scholarships in the department of history noting the Julia Child Fellowship on their application.
  4. Submit a letter describing your qualifications and interest in food studies as a supplement to the scholarship application, describing a research interest in any area of food history, including any applicable relationship to the research and teaching interests of faculty members in the department of history, and demonstrating a commitment to focusing on food history as a graduate student at UNT, and promoting the development of food studies at UNT.
The Major General Olinto Mark Barsanti Graduate Fellowship in Military History

A fund to establish a Graduate Fellowship to enable the University to attract and retain graduate students who have a primary research and future academic interests in military history and are wishing to pursue a PhD in Miliary History. Recipients shall be designated a Barsanti Scholar.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. The fellowship will be awarded to applicants prepared to devote full time to graduate studies.
  2. No awardee may work more than twenty hours per week, including work as a teaching fellow, a research assistant, or in the College Work Study Program.
  3. Academic potential for excellence as evidenced by GPA, publications, scholarly presentations; and
  4. Exceptional record in the study of Military History; and
  5. Two letters of recommendation attesting to the integrity and professional/academic potential of the applicant.
  6. So that the committee may review your record of study, you must provide the dissertation chapters you have completed in the program so far (if applicable) and your CV.
The Mike Mlinac Military History Scholarship Endowment

A fund in honor of Mike Mlinac’s service to the UNT Foundation and his passion for military history and to provide scholarships for graduate students pursuing a military history concentration at the University.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University (or its successor) in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment; and
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student pursuing a military history concentration at the University.
The Richard Lowe Graduate Award in American Civil War History

A fund to provide support for graduate students studying the Civil War in the Department of History.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of their degree program and does not need full-time enrollment; and
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student in History studying the American Civil War at the University or, in the event that American Civil War is no longer part of the curriculum at the University, enroll as a full-time graduate student in History studying any topic area.
The Shinko & Thomas McDonald Award for Texas History

A fund to support students studying Texas history within the 1821-1860 timeframe.

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the Department of History (or its successor) in effect at the time of any award;
  2. Maintain full-time enrollment as established by the University, unless the student is nearing completion of his or her degree program and does not need full-time enrollment; and
  3. Enroll as a full-time graduate student majoring in History with a focus on Texas history from 1821-1860 at the University.
