Abstract: In 1853 the northern segment of the Pacific Railroad Survey, led by Isaac Stevens, traversed present-day Montana from Fort Union to the Bitterroot Mountains. The expedition recorded scientific data, encountered Indians, and explored Rocky Mountain passes.

"Filibusters and Regular Troops in San Francisco, 1851-1855," by Durwood Ball

Abstract: Presidents Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce ordered army commanders in the Pacific Division to intervene against filibusters organizing in and launching from San Francisco in the early 1850s. The civil constabulary missions of Colonel Ethan A. Hitchcock and Brigadier General John E. Wool were defeated by local and national politics, official lethargy, and popular will.

This second of two installments follows Chipman's regiment, from September 1863 to the end of the war, through Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama.
