"'Dear Mrs. Wilmer': Trooper J. J. Rohn Describes the Steptoe Battlefield" Edited by James Robbins Jewell
Abstract: This article examines two letters that provide a first-hand description of a small battle in eastern Washington State in 1858 between a detachment of troops from the U.S. Army and Native Americans of the Spokan, Coeur d'Alene, and Palouse tribes. Written by one of the soldiers about five decades after the event, these letters are nevertheless worth preserving because they document one part of the story of the Indian Wars in the northwestern United States.
