Masters thesis title: Competing Models of Hegemonic Masculinity in English Civil War Memoirs by Women

Specialty Areas: My areas of interest is in Gender History and Latino History

I have used concepts and theories from other disciplines such as gender studies and literary analysis, and applied them to primary sources. For my Masters I examined the descriptions of Royalist and Parliamentarian masculinity in English Civil War memoirs by women through a close reading of three biographical memoirs written by Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle; Lady Ann Fanshawe; and Lucy Hutchinson. The analysis of two competing models of Royalist and Parliamentarian masculinities in English Civil War memoirs offered a nuanced view of the social division during the Civil War that supports a social interpretation of the causes of the English Civil War.

One notion that remained out of this work was how individual perceptions of gender can differ so widely within a culture and impact historical events. Often, an individual's perceptions present a stronger case in their decision-making process than facts. For my dissertation, I plan to continue working with literary primary sources to examine the role of gender and how it intersects with race and class in the social divisions of early modern Europe.
