A Message to UNT History Students

All of us in the Department of History care very much about your ongoing academic success. We are doing all that we can to make sure that you can continue to make progress toward your degrees, receive excellent instruction and support, and experience the excitement and life-changing benefits that come with the study of history.

As we all navigate life in midst of a pandemic, it seems more clear than ever that we are not only studying history, we are also living it.

Professor Nancy Stockdale has encouraged her students to write about this experience and to collectively create an archive for future generations to use to understand what it was like to live in this moment. This is what she says:

We are now living in a dramatic, world-wide historical moment that is unprecedented in modern world history. Historians will be studying it for generations. I encourage you to keep a journal of how you are experiencing the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020. If you can keep this using pen and paper, or in a printable document, that is best for historic preservation, but you could also make art, music, or anything else - just please, start recording your personal experiences. Let us now be aware of this historic moment and leave our legacy for the future.

I would like to encourage all UNT history students to take Professor Stockdale's suggestion to write about what we are experiencing. Later, we can compile our responses to this crisis and create an archive that will aid the historians of the future.

In the meantime, we want you to know that we are all committed to helping you succeed in your history classes. By changing how we deliver our curriculum, we are glad we can do our part to help make sure that you and our communities stay safe and well.

Sincerely, Jennifer Jensen Wallach, Chair of the Department of History
