THE SPRING SEMINAR ON INCORPORATING EAST ASIA INTO THE SECONDARY CURRICULUM

FREE lecture series!

Sponsored by the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia and funded by a grant from the Freeman Foundation This Spring Seminar consists of a series of seven in-person sessions to be held on the campus of Southern Methodist University and three online sessions hosted on Blackboard through the University of North Texas website. The Spring Seminar is designed to supply teachers of social studies and world history with the basic knowledge needed to incorporate East Asia into their courses. Topics have been chosen with the needs of the TEKS and of the AP World History standards in mind. Teachers in other disciplines (such as literature or art) whose courses can incorporate East Asia are also welcome to register.

Seminar topics: Geography and the Foundations of East Asian Civilizations, Belief Systems: Daoism, Confucianism, and Legalism, Chinese Empires and Their Neighbors: Qin, Han, Period of North/South Division and Tang, Aesthetes and Warriors in Japanese History, The Mongols in World History, China and the World in the Ming Dynasty, East Asia’s 19th Century: Dealing With Imperialism, East Asia in WWI and WWII, The Korean and Vietnam Wars: Background and East Asian Perspectives, Mao Zedong’s China, and Democracy in East Asia.

Study Tour Eligibility: Teachers who participate in NCTA programs may become eligible to apply for heavily subsidized Study Tours to East Asia by attending at least 30 hours of NCTA seminars and submitting a report on how they have used the knowledge and material from the NCTA seminars into their teaching by February 1 of the year the person applies for a study tour. Study Tours will be offered on a competitive basis and are subject to the availability of funding.
